Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-ḍ-w, which gives Arabic عضو ("member" or "organ"). Adding the relational suffix ي produces the adjective عضوي ("organic" or "pertaining to a member"). Attaching the abstract-noun ending ة to that adjective yields عضوية, literally "the state of being a member," i.e. membership. This is a native Arabic Semitic formation, not derived from Indo-European stock.
