The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root h-w-s (ه-و-س), tied to the verb hawisa, meaning to become infatuated or lose sound judgment over something. Hawas is the verbal noun (masdar) of that root, so it names the state itself: an unchecked craze or mania. The root is native Semitic and has no established Indo-European relative.
