Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ز-ح-م (z-ḥ-m), which carries the sense of pressing together or thronging. مزدحم is the active participle of the Form VIII verb ازدحم (izdaḥama), meaning to become crowded or throng together. In this pattern the infix ت of the افتعل template assimilates to د after the root-initial ز, giving the شكل muzdaḥim rather than muztaḥim. Arabic morphology builds on consonantal roots rather than Indo-European stems, so there is no PIE root behind this word.
