Etymology

تَغْذِيَة is the verbal noun of the Form II verb غَذَّى (to feed, to nourish), built on the triliteral root غ ذ و. That root carries the core sense of nourishing or sustaining, and it also gives Arabic the common noun غِذَاء (food, nourishment). Because the root's final letter is the weak و, the expected masdar pattern تَفْعِيل shifts to تَفْعِلَة, which is why the word ends in ية rather than the more usual يل.
