Etymology
Masḥūq is the passive participle of the verb sahaqa, from the triliteral Semitic root s-ḥ-q, meaning to crush, pound, or grind to dust. Classical Arabic also used the root for the sense of being cast far off, as when something is ground away to nothing. The word entered everyday use as both an adjective (crushed, ground) and, by extension, a noun for any fine powder.
