Etymology
تَقَدَّم is Form V of the Semitic root ق-د-م (q-d-m), which carries the idea of front, precedence, and moving ahead. Form V adds a reflexive sense to Form II قَدَّمَ (to put forward, to present), so the verb means to put oneself forward, to advance. The same root gives قَدَم (foot), قَديم (old, ancient), and مُقَدِّمَة (introduction).
