Etymology

شَخْصِيَّة derives from شَخْص (shakhṣ), meaning person or individual figure, built on the Semitic root sh-kh-ṣ. Arabic adds the relational suffix -iyy to form an adjective, then the feminine ending -a to make an abstract noun, literally person-ness. The word names the whole set of traits a person shows. The same root also yields شَخَّصَ, to diagnose, and تَشْخيص, diagnosis.
