Etymology

From the triliteral Arabic root ش-خ-ص (sh-kh-ṣ), whose verb شَخَصَ (shakhaṣa) means 'to loom, rise into view, or stare fixedly.' A شَخْص was thus originally a 'figure that appears or looms into sight,' a sense that generalized to any individual human being. The same root underlies شَخْصِيّة 'personality' and تَشْخيص 'diagnosis' (identifying/characterizing something).
