Etymology

جَيِّد derives from the triliteral Semitic root ج-و-د (j-w-d), which carries the senses of goodness, excellence, and generosity. It is formed on the فَيْعِل adjective pattern, originally *jaywid, in which the weak و assimilated to the following ي to give the geminated jayyid. The same root yields جَوْدة 'quality' and جُود 'generosity'.
