Etymology

قامَ derives from the Proto-Semitic triliteral root *q-w-m 'to stand, rise', one of the most stable and widespread roots across the Semitic family. The weak middle radical (و) surfaces as a long ā in the past tense (قامَ) and as ū in the present (يَقومُ), making it a typical hollow verb. It has direct cognates in Hebrew, Aramaic and Ge'ez, all carrying the core sense of standing or rising.
