جِدّ derives from the Semitic triliteral root ج-د-د (j-d-d), whose core senses fan out into 'to be new' and 'to be earnest, to strive.' From the earnestness branch comes the abstract noun jidd, 'seriousness, diligence,' which classically stands in opposition to هَزْل (hazl, 'jest'). It is a فِعْل (fiʕl) noun built on the geminate (doubled) root.
