أَحَد comes from the common Semitic root for 'one', closely tied to Arabic واحِد (wāḥid). Classical grammarians traced it to an earlier *waḥad, with the initial wāw shifting to a hamza. It carries both the cardinal sense 'one' and the indefinite sense 'anyone/someone', and as الأَحَد it names both Sunday and the absolute, indivisible Oneness of God.
