Etymology
راوَنْد is a loanword that entered Arabic from Persian رَاوَنْد (rāvand), the name of the rhubarb plant (genus Rheum). The plant's dried root was a major medicinal and trade commodity along the routes from Iran and China, so the word travelled with the goods into many languages as a Wanderwort. In classical Arabic medicine the root — especially راوَنْد صيني, 'Chinese rhubarb' — was prized as a purgative.
