Etymology

تُوت comes from an old Semitic word for mulberry rather than from Arabic's native triliteral derivation system. It is a wanderword found across Aramaic ܬܘܬܐ (tūtā) and Hebrew תות (tut), and it passed further into Persian توت (tūt) and from there into Turkish dut. Because the word was borrowed rather than built from a native root, it does not generate the usual wide family of derived verbs that Arabic roots normally produce.
