Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral Arabic root ج-م-ع, meaning to gather or collect. From this root comes جامعة, the word for university, built on the active-participle pattern and literally meaning a comprehensive or gathering institution, one that brings together many fields of study. جامِعِيّ is the nisba, or relative-adjective, form of جامعة: it strips the feminine ending and adds the suffix ـيّ, giving the meaning of or belonging to a university. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root to trace this word to.
