Etymology

مَحْمَل comes from the triliteral root ح-م-ل (ḥ-m-l), meaning to carry or bear a load. It follows the مَفْعَل (maf'al) pattern, which regularly builds nouns of place, time, or manner from a verb, so the word literally names the place or manner in which something is carried. Historically it named the ornate litter that Egyptian and Syrian rulers sent each year with the Hajj caravan to Mecca. Today it survives mainly in the fixed phrase حمل/أخذ على محمل, where it marks the light or attitude in which words or actions are taken.
