Etymology

تقييم is the verbal noun (masdar) of the Form II verb قَيَّمَ, meaning to evaluate or appraise. Both trace to the same Semitic root as قِيمَة, meaning value or worth, so the underlying sense is to assign a value to something. The root is a hollow root, and its middle radical waw surfaces as ya' before a kasra, which is why the spelling has ي rather than و. This is a native Semitic derivation, not an Indo-European one.
