Etymology
جَرَح comes from the Semitic root ج-ر-ح (j-r-ḥ), a core Arabic root tied to cutting and injury. It appears throughout classical and modern Arabic, both for physical wounds and, by extension, for emotional or reputational harm. The root also gave rise to terms in Islamic legal scholarship for challenging a witness's reliability. It has no established Indo-European cognates, since Arabic is a Semitic language.
