The word comes from the Semitic root f-ṭ-r (ف ط ر), which carries the core sense of splitting or breaking something open. From this root Arabic built the verb faṭara, to break or to split, and by extension to break a fast. Faṭūr is the noun for the meal that performs that break: literally, the breaking of the night's fast, the same logic behind the English word breakfast.
