جَميل comes from the Semitic root ج-م-ل (j-m-l), which carries the linked ideas of beauty and of doing good. As a noun it names a good deed or favor, a fine act done for another person. The same root gives جَمال ('beauty'). Hebrew preserves a parallel sense in גָּמַל (gāmal), 'to recompense or deal out good.'
