Etymology

خِلالَ comes from the Semitic root خ ل ل, which points to a gap or the space between things. The noun خِلال first named those intervals, and as an adverbial noun it came to mark the span of time within which something happens. The same root gives خَلَل, a defect or gap, and the verb خَلَّ, to pierce.
