Etymology
Khalal comes from the Semitic root kh-l-l, whose core sense is a gap or empty space between things. Arabic extended this spatial idea to abstract disorder: a khalal is a break in what should be continuous or sound, whether a mechanical fault or a flaw in an argument. The same root gives khilal, meaning 'during' or 'through the interval of,' and khaleel, a close friend, from the notion of someone who fills the gap beside you.
