Etymology
حُرّ comes from the Semitic root ḥ-r-r, which carries the sense of being freeborn and noble. In early Arabic it named a person of free legal status, the opposite of a slave, and from there it widened to mean free in general. The same root gives ḥurriyya, the standard word for freedom. Cognate forms appear across other Semitic languages.
