Etymology

تَحَوَّل is the Form V verb built on the Semitic root ḥ-w-l, which carries the sense of turning, changing, and shifting. The basic Form I verb ḥāla means to change or turn, and the causative Form II ḥawwala means to transform something. The reflexive prefix ta- turns the action back on the subject, so the word means to change or turn into something on its own.
