Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ظ-ل-ل, which carries the idea of shade and shadow. The same root gives ظِلّ, meaning shade. ظَلَّ first described doing something by day, in contrast to بَاتَ for the night, then widened to mean staying in a state or keeping on with an action. In modern Arabic it serves as a verb of continuity, close to English 'to keep' or 'to remain.'
