Etymology
داعٍ is the active participle of the verb دعا (daʿā), 'to call.' Its root د-ع-و runs through a wide family of words about calling, inviting, and praying. The weak final radical (و) gives the noun its defective declension, dropping to داعٍ when indefinite.
