Etymology

نَزَل comes from the Semitic triliteral root n-z-l, which carries the sense of moving downward. In Arabic it settled into the meanings of descending, dismounting, and alighting to stay somewhere. Cognate roots in Hebrew and Aramaic shifted toward the idea of flowing or dripping down. The same root gives Arabic its everyday word for house, مَنزِل, the place where a traveler alights.
