Etymology
مالِك is the active participle of the verb مَلَكَ, 'to own.' It comes from the Semitic root م-ل-ك, which joins the ideas of owning and ruling. The same root gives مَلِك, 'king,' and مُلْك, 'dominion.' Related roots appear across the Semitic family, such as Hebrew מֶלֶךְ, 'king.'
