Etymology

The word is a loanword adapted into Arabic from "Aryan." It traces back to Sanskrit ā́rya and Avestan airya, terms ancient Indo-Iranian speakers used for themselves, meaning roughly "noble" or "of our own people." Arabic took the name آريا and formed the relative adjective آريّ by adding the nisba suffix -iyy. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the term entered European racial theory and was later notoriously appropriated by the Nazis.
