Etymology
The word traces back to the Arabic root س-ج-د (s-j-d), meaning to prostrate or bow down in worship. A سجادة was first the mat a worshipper knelt and pressed his forehead on, the spot of prostration. Over time the word widened from a prayer mat to any woven floor covering, and سجّاد became the general collective term for carpets.
