Etymology
مَشْرُوط comes from the Arabic root ش ر ط (sh-r-ṭ), whose base verb شَرَطَ originally carried the sense of cutting or marking a line, and from there came to mean fixing a condition or stipulation, much as a boundary mark fixes a limit. مَشْرُوط is the passive participle of that verb, so it literally means 'that which has been stipulated' or 'made conditional'. The same root gives شَرْط, 'a condition', and شُرْطة, 'police', from an older sense of a marked or designated corps.
