Etymology

The word is built from the triliteral Semitic root ع-ر-ب (ʿ-r-b), which underlies عَرَب (ʿarab), the collective noun for Arabs. Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ (-iyy), which turns a noun into a relative adjective meaning 'belonging to' or 'of', gives عَرَبِيّ, 'Arab, Arabic'. The root itself is old and pre-Islamic, appearing in Akkadian and other ancient Near Eastern texts to describe desert-dwelling peoples of the Arabian peninsula.
