Etymology

مُريب is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَرَابَ, built on the triliteral root ر ي ب, which carries the core sense of doubt or suspicion. The related noun رَيْب means doubt, as in the well-known Quranic phrase لا رَيْبَ فيه, no doubt about it. As a Form IV participle, مُريب literally names one who or that which causes doubt in others, hence suspicious or suspect. The root is native Semitic and has no Indo-European ancestor.
