The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root ج-م-ه-ر, which carries the sense of gathering or amassing. A جُمْهُور is thus a mass of people brought together. The same root gives جُمْهُورِيَّة, the modern word for republic, a state whose authority rests on the mass of citizens.
