Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ض-ج-ع (ḍ-j-ʿ), which carries the sense of lying down or reclining. The same root gives مَضْجَع, a bed or resting place. In Form III the pattern adds the idea of doing the act with another person, so the verb narrows to sharing a bed, and from there to sexual relations.
