Word family
Etymology
The name descends from the Phoenician letter gīml, which also gave Hebrew gimel and Greek gamma. Its older Semitic name may have meant 'camel', a word still seen in Arabic jamal. Arabic reshaped the inherited gīml into jīm, and the meaning faded so that the word now names only the letter and its sound.
