Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ʼ-th-r, which carries the idea of a trace, track, or footprint. In Form II the root doubles its middle consonant and takes a causative sense: to leave a mark on something, and so to affect or influence it. The related noun أَثَر means 'trace' or 'effect,' and تَأْثِير means 'influence.'
