Etymology

تَأْثِير is the verbal noun of the Form II verb أَثَّرَ, to affect or leave a mark. It comes from the triliteral root ء-ث-ر, whose base noun أَثَر means trace or footprint. The taf'īl pattern carries a causative sense, so the word names the act of leaving a mark on something. From a physical trace the meaning widened to influence and effect.
