Etymology
أَثَر comes from the Semitic root ʔ-th-r, which joins the sense of a place left behind with the mark of passage. The same root gives Aramaic ʾaṯar and Akkadian ašru, both meaning 'place.' In Arabic the word settled on the idea of a trace: a footprint, a mark, or a lasting effect. The plural آثار came to mean ruins, monuments, and antiquities.
