Etymology

تَخَلَّى is the Form V (reflexive) verb of the root خ-ل-و, whose base sense is being empty or free of something. The plain verb خَلا means to be vacant or to be rid of a thing. Adding the prefix تـ and doubling the middle radical turns the sense back on the subject: to make oneself free of something, that is, to give it up. It almost always takes the preposition عن.
