Etymology

أَهَمَّ is the Form IV verb of the triliteral root هـ م م, whose core sense is concern, worry, and intent. The base verb هَمَّ means to worry someone or to set out to do a thing. The Form IV pattern adds a causative shade, 'to make a matter a concern for someone', hence 'to be of importance to'. The same root gives هَمّ (worry), هِمّة (resolve), and مُهِمّ (important). The root is Semitic, not Indo-European.
