قابَل is the Form III verb of the triliteral root ق-ب-ل (q-b-l), whose core sense is the front of something and the act of facing or receiving it. The Form III pattern فاعَل adds a mutual, face-to-face sense, so the verb means to meet someone. The same root gives قَبِلَ, to accept, and قِبْلة, the direction faced in prayer.
