Etymology
ذات is the feminine of ذو, the old Semitic demonstrative and relative element meaning 'possessor of, that of'. From 'the one having' it narrowed to 'the thing itself', then to the abstract noun 'self, essence'. The word is not Indo-European, so it has no PIE root; its kin are the demonstratives of other Semitic languages.
