Etymology
Arabic borrowed جِنْس from Greek génos, meaning race, kind, or descent, probably through Aramaic. The loan spread when Greek logic and philosophy were translated into Arabic, where it carried the technical sense genus. From kind or category the meaning later widened to sex, treated as one of the basic divisions of living things. The donor word descends from Indo-European, but the Arabic noun is a loan and not native to the Semitic stock.
