The verb comes from the triliteral root و-ق-ف (w-q-f), which carries the idea of standing and stopping. Form I وَقَفَ means to stand or come to a stop on one's own. أَوْقَفَ is the Form IV (causative) pattern: to make something stop. The same root yields وَقْف, property set aside as a permanent religious endowment.
