Etymology
From the Semitic root w-ḥ-d, which carries the sense of being one or single. The same root gives واحِد (one) and وَحْدة (unity). Used as an adverb, it takes a pronoun suffix, as in وَحْدَهُ (by himself), and works as a circumstantial accusative that marks someone acting while alone.
