Etymology

مُؤَخَّر derives from the Semitic root ʾ-kh-r, 'to be behind, to come after.' From it Arabic forms the verb أَخَّرَ, 'to put back, to postpone.' مُؤَخَّر is the passive participle of that verb, literally 'that which is put behind,' so it names the rear part of a thing or a payment deferred to a later date. The same root gives آخِر, 'last,' and the cognate Hebrew אַחַר, 'after.'
