The verb descends from the Proto-Semitic root *p-t-ḥ, meaning to open. The same root gave Hebrew pataḥ and Aramaic pᵉtaḥ, both meaning to open, and Akkadian petû. Arabic kept the original sense and extended it to conquer and to inaugurate.
