Etymology

حَضَرَ comes from the Semitic root ح-ض-ر, which joins the ideas of being present and being settled. In Arabic the same root separates townspeople (حَضَر) from desert nomads (بَدْو), and it yields حَضَارَة, the word for civilization. The Hebrew חָצֵר, meaning courtyard or settlement, reflects the same root and the same link between presence and a fixed dwelling.
