Etymology
فَتْح is the verbal noun of the verb فَتَحَ, 'to open.' It comes from the Semitic root p-t-ḥ, found across the family with the same core sense of opening. From 'opening' the word extended to 'conquest,' since taking a city was spoken of as opening it. The related divine name al-Fattāḥ, 'the Opener,' and the Ethiopic sense 'to judge' show how the root also reached the idea of deciding or settling.
